Nigerian Stars Davido, Rema Shine at 2023 Trace Awards

Nigerian rappers Rema and Davido emerged as the top winners at the 2023 Trace Awards, held in Kigali, Rwanda, on October 21.

The Trace Awards, a new franchise created by global TV and multimedia platform Trace, aim to honour African and Afro-influenced musicians.

Rema’s global hit “Calm Down,” which reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 with a remix featuring Selena Gomez, won Song of the Year. Rema also tied with Nomcebo for Best Global African Artist.

Davido took home two awards: Best Male and Best Collaboration for “Unavailable,” a track with South African artist Musa Keys. Burna Boy’s “Love Damini” won Album of the Year.

The event featured performances by approximately 50 African and Afro-inspired artists globally, including Davido, Yemi Alade, Mr Eazi, and Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania.

Trace’s chairman and co-founder, Olivier Laouchez, praised the nominees and performers for demonstrating the power and creativity of African and African-origin artists.

Other award shows have recently added categories recognizing African music. Wizkid won Favorite Afrobeats Artist at the American Music Awards in November 2022, and Rema & Selena Gomez’s “Calm Down” won Best Afrobeats at the MTV Video Awards in September.

The Trace Awards nominees for the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance will be announced on November 10.

In addition to the competitive categories, three special awards were presented: a Lifetime Achievement Award to Nigeria’s 2Face, a Change Maker Award to Mr Eazi for his philanthropy, and the Best Global African Artist Award to Rema and Nomcebo.

    Nadia Mukami

Three Kenyan musicians were nominated but did not win any awards. Nadia Mukami, who had been nominated in two categories, performed her song “Kai Wangu” (featuring Arrow Bwoy), while gospel star Janet Otieno delivered a powerful stage act.

However, the night belonged to Nigerian stars Davido and Rema, who each won two awards.
